SWAP – Bologna-Bergen

SWAP is an international residency and exhibition project that aims to activate and promote cultural exchange and creative cooperation between Italy and abroad through the involvement of national and international artists. The first SWAP will take place between Bologna and Bergen.

SWAP is curated by Amerigo Mariotti and Giorgia Tronconi of Adiacenze and Manuel Portioli, artist and curator who lives and works in Bergen. The artists selected for the first stage of the project are the artistic duo of Bologna Antonello Ghezzi, composed of Nadia Antonello and Paolo Ghezzi. The project is carried out with the support of the Italian Cultural Institute of Oslo and of the City of Bergen and, in partnership with Cone 7, Habitat Artspace and Casa della Cultura “Italo Calvino” in Calderara di Reno and the patronage of Comune di Bologna.

The project will take place from the end of March 2022, when the duo will be hosted for a three-week residency in Bergen. Here the artists will have the opportunity to research, experiment and produce new works in the stimulating environment of Cone 7, a newborn
ceramic workshop run by professional ceramists Lorie Ballage and Eléonore Griveau, thus creating a fertile ground for exchange between Italian artists and the artists active in Bergen.
In the last week of their residency, the artists will exhibit the result of their experience at Habitat Artspace exhibition space inside Gyldenpris Kunsthall in Bergen through an exhibition that will open to the public on Friday 8 April.
The second part of the project will continue in autumn, when the Norwegian-based artists Lorie Ballage and Eléonore Griveau, in turn, will be in Calderara di Reno (BO) for a three-week residency that will end with an exhibition in the spaces of Adiacenze in Bologna, while Casa della Cultura “Italo Calvino” in Calderara di Reno will host collateral events such as talks and workshops related to the themes of the project and the exhibition.

The final objective of SWAP is to offer artists the opportunity to confront themselves through their own artistic practice with a different cultural context through a period of residency aimed at research, experimentation and production of new works resulting from this experience: SWAP wants to give the possibility contemporary artists to broaden their gaze from the Italian to the international scene, finding new ideas and resources to increase their artistic research in contact with other realities and cultural operators abroad. Likewise, this cultural bridge will also allow foreign artists to get to know and interact with the Italian and Bolognese territory in particular through a stimulating and enriching experience. Adiacenze, in fact, will put them in relation with other artists, companies, institutions and local universities that can be useful for the development of their artistic practice. Furthermore, through SWAP, Adiacenze wants to establish a fruitful and stimulating collaboration between Bologna and the Bergen art scene as a first step towards the creation of an international network of independent exhibition spaces dedicated to contemporary art that can foster the mobility and intercultural exchange of artists and curators at European level.
