– Sanger for to pianoer –

Liner notes by Enrico Pieranunzi:
What is intelligence in music?
This question might sound bizarre given that the art of sound – or indeed of every art form – tends to be viewed as a land of chaos overrun by a highly mixed assortment of emotions, emphatically those in the purest and most unalloyed state possible.
As a first step towards answering this question, I would say that intelligence in music – or indeed in any artistic creativity – starts with the ability to choose the primary materials with great care and attention and – even more importantly –continues with the ability to organise them “intelligently”. Here the etymology – inter “between” + legere “choose, pick out, read,” – helps clarify: intelligence denotes knowing how to distinguish between that which is necessary and that which is superfluous; between that which has substance and that which does not; and between that which it is important to say and that which it is better left unsaid. From this it will be clear that I consider Stenen i Forsen (The Stone in the Fast Flowing Mountain Stream) to be an extremely intelligent project.
Each and every track is the result of intense research charged with an imagination and a depth that renders any discussion of style or language totally irrelevant for it is informed throughout by an a penetrating awareness of the story-telling and dramatic qualities of playing music. The musical concept which underpins the whole CD is that of a work for solo piano performed on two pianos: two separate organisms, two different characters, constantly engaged in an interaction–conflict that miraculously and indeed intelligently (!) emerge as one. Bozzolan playfully measures, manipulates and deploys his materials. He shapes, expands and distorts the opening ideas of each piece in a way that his two-in-one approach enables his “Songs for Two Pianos” to become liquid sound-sculptures whose outlines gradually evolve into their definitive shape. This fascinating process of manipulation reaches its acme perhaps in the magnificent Aquarium Life.
The CD breathes originality out of every note, forcefully grabbing the listener’s attention, an attention that this project truly, totally deserves.
