Saxophonist, clarinetist, composer, singer when necessary. Born in Rome, Toni Germani has played and collaborated with musicians of various fame and backgrounds (from the Roman composer and pianist Fabrizio De Rossi Re to the Pakistani singer Ustad Fateh Alì Khan, from the Sicilian pianist Andrea Alberti to the African-American drummer Billy Higgins); he has played and recorded good or bad almost every kind of music (from Italian folk music to Cuban music to contemporary music); has participated in international festivals, in Italy and abroad (from Rome to Seoul to Los Angeles to Mexico City). His personal creative path since 1994 is documented in 10 records in his name (the last, We Colonized Souls, was released in April this year), containing almost exclusively his compositions, published by Italian and English labels and distributed internationally.
Percussionist and Drummercussionist, Massimo Carrano has a multi-decade career as a side-man in prestigious formations (RAI light rhythms orchestra, Teresa De Sio, Lucilla Galeazzi, Francesco di Giacomo, Arpeggiata, Maria Pia De Vito, Concerto Köln, Shakira, Olla Vogala, Prem Joshua, Mauro Pagani, Shizuko Noiri, to name a few) and as a soloist, appreciated in Italy and abroad.
Established teacher and passionate researcher, he founded the «Rhythmic Sensitization Method» for the recovery and development of rhythmic instinct. He has already collaborated with Toni Germani in the group Toni Germani Hard Times Trio.

-» Germani loves melody as do few musicians, loves it unadorned and with passion … The effect is both laconic and luxuriant – so few notes, so much sound. … Improvisation exists as a way to prolong melody and develop tone …«.

– “Scatola isn’t very far from ascolta (listen) and that’s all you have to do with this elegant set of mid-range ballads from Germani. He’s a passionate guy, whose political advocacy is never strident and all the more compelling for being cast in these arrestingly beautiful forms.”
Brian Morton, Jazz Journal, January 2017.
– “All seven tracks on the album are original compositions by Italian saxophonist Toni Germani. The music is clearly subjectively expressionistic, a statement of the value – to the artist – of melody as an essential form of musical creation and narrative. So, it is a personal and idiosyncratic articulation of the musician’s inner experience, both of music and of the world around him. The album seems never to change pace: it is utterly cool, phlegmatic; everybody has all the time in the world to get to where they are going, but there’s no urgency and the mode is very down-to-earth. This brings to the album a certain grace – and the music and its playing are dispensed with considerable elegance. Definitely music to relax to.”

– “The most melodic of the albums is delivered by alto saxist/vocalist Toni Germani and his team of Giovanni Ceccarelli/p, Mauro Gargano/b; Patrick Goraguer/dr. He writes all the material, and it’s all very attractive and accessible. He’s got a sweet and sour Campari of a tone, and uses it well as the rhythm team delivers a sleek «Cercando Parole» and nimbly bopping «Little Big Aunt.»(…) Germani can be both passionate and romantic as on the rubato «Anno Che Va, Anno Che Viene,» yet every piece has a luscious groove. Excellent!”

– “TONI GERMANI [as/voc] has been kicking around for a couple of decades [DDQ Records and Splasch] and now has his first release on Slam Records: SONGS IN A BOX [SLAMCD 573]. Joining him on this 10/23 &12/3/15 set of 7 originals [70:07] are Giovanni Ceccarelli [p], Mauro Gargano [b] and Patrick Goraguer [drm]. As a whole the album is dedicated to truth and freedom fighters while some of the dedications on individual compositions are interesting like to all the women named Angelica I have known of or on the one piece with vocals (sung in Italian) to all those who are destroying the planet or to all the migrants. This is a very laid back set, the leader plays in an un-rushed manner and with clearly formulated lines in a matter-of-fact style.” Robert D Rusch, Cadence, Oct 2016
