SWAP: Kunstnerduoen Orecchie d’Asino i Bergen

SWAP
The second edition of the international art residency project curated by Adiacenze starts with Orecchie d’Asino artistic duo in Bergen, Norway. The residenzy will last from April 11 to April 30 and will close with an exhibition from April 28 to April 30 2023 tacing place at Bergen Ateliergruppe.

SWAP is an international art residency project that aims to activate and promote cultural exchange and creative cooperation between Italy and abroad through the involvement of national and international artists. After the first exchange between Bologna and the Norwegian city of Bergen in 2022, the second edition of SWAP will start in April 2023 with the residency of artistic duo Orecchie d’Asino (Ornella De Carlo and Federica Porro) in Bergen from 11 to April 30 together with the curators Amerigo Mariotti and Giorgia Tronconi of Adiacenze. The project is the winner of the Culture Moves Europe grant funded by the European Union and implemented by the Goethe Institut. It is sponsored by the Italian Cultural Institute of Oslo and Bergen Kommune, in collaboration with Hordaland Kunstsenter and Bergen Ateliergruppe and with the patronage of the Municipality of Bologna.

During the residency period in Bergen, the duo will develop their research around the ideas of idleness, boredom and stasis as parts of the artist’s creative action and, more generally, as a necessary parenthesis to set thoughts in motion, in contrast with the frenzy and hyper-productivity induced by the neo-capitalist system. The artists will develop these reflections through the direct involvement of the Bergen community, collecting their testimonies and personal experiences through interviews and meetings that will form the basis for the creation of an audiovisual work. The results of this first part of the duo’s research will be exhibited in the Bergen Ateliergruppe spaces in the final days of the residency, from 28 to 30 April 2023.
The curators of Adiacenze will follow the development of Orecchie d’Asino’s project, supporting and guiding its field research. At the same time, on this occasion they will deepen their knowledge of the Bergen art scene to select the artist who will then be hosted in Bologna in autumn for the second stage of the project, which includes a three-week residency and a final exhibition in the spaces of Adiacenze in November 2023.

The final objective of SWAP is to offer artists the opportunity to interact with a different cultural, social and geographical context through a period of residence aimed at research, experimentation and the production of new works resulting from this experience: SWAP wants to give the possibility to contemporary artists to broaden their gaze from the Italian scene to the international one, finding new ideas and resources to develop their artistic research in contact with other realities and cultural professionals abroad. Similarly, this cultural bridge will also allow international artists to get to know and engage with the Italian and Bologna area in particular through a stimulating and enriching experience. In fact, Adiacenze will put them in contact with other local artists, companies, institutions and universities that can be useful for the development of their artistic practice.
Eventually, through SWAP, Adiacenze wants to establish a fruitful and stimulating collaboration between Bologna and the Bergen art scene as a first step towards the creation of an international network of independent exhibition spaces dedicated to contemporary art that can promote the mobility and intercultural exchange of artists and curators at European level.
