“Zacara Triduum”. European paths to celebrate a protagonist of early European music
In the late summer of 1416 the news spread of the death of one of the leading figures of European music during the Great Schism: Antonio Zacara da Teramo, probably back in his homeland in the last years of his life to lead the chapel of the local cathedral. Already a papal singer since the times of Boniface IX, Zacara had arrived in Rome very young as a member of a family of illuminators, as many other workshops probably called to participate in the reintegration of the library of the Holy See after the return of the Curia from Avignon. This professional start seems a little surprising for Zacara, given that he was born phocomelic, with some fingers and an entire arm completely unusable. It is a proof of his artistic versatility. Besides being an excellent illuminator, he remained famous for more than fifty years after his death for his level of excellence both in music and poetry, not least as the author of the often enigmatic lyrics of his secular compositions. An important example is the production of ballatas on the theme of Fortune, his imaginary confidant in the years of professional exile that elapsed between his abandonment of the service to Gregory XII and his hiring as the chapelmaster to the antipope John XXIII. All this happened during the Councils of Pisa and Constance, where Zacara’s compositions were credited by musicinas from all over Europe, as a precise model for liturgical music. The international dimension of this composer, rediscovered by musicologists only in recent times, has encouraged three renowned ensembles for medieval music – Currentes (Norway), Leones (Germany), and Micrologus (Italy) – to share their experiences to celebrate the 600th anniversary of his death with an ambitious project: devoting three special concert programs to Zacara in his historical and stylistic context, to be performed in the respective countries during single weekends with related events such as talks, workshops, and exhibitions.

Konserten avholdes i Rosenktrantztårnet, Bergen. For mer informasjon og billetter, gå inn på Bergen Middelaldermusikkdagers hjemmeside her.
