An opportunity for literature. A workshop with Nadeesha Uyangoda

An opportunity for literature. A writer-to-writer workshop.

In the EUNIC Norway’s series of workshops for writers where we invite well known authors from the different member countries to hold a workshop for Norwegian writers of different kind, we’ve now come to the Italian contribution. The IIC has invited the young and upcoming writer Nadeesha Uyangoda.

Belonging and alterity: writing culture and identity

Nadeesha Uyangoda (1993) is a writer, podcaster and freelance author. Her stories have appeared, among others, in Al Jazeera English, The Telegraph, Vice Italy, Open Democracy. Currently she is a columnist for Internazionale magazine and a contributor for Italian newspapers La Repubblica and La Stampa.

Her debut non-fiction book, L’unica persona nera nella stanza [The only black person in the room] earned a spot on many prestigious award longlists and shortlists. It was awarded the Premio Sila ’49 categoria “Economia e Società”, Premio Rapallo Speciale “Anna Maria Ortese”, Premio Anima per la Letteratura, Premio Giuditta per la Saggistica al femminile. She is the creator of the podcast Sulla Razza [About Race], sponsored by Juventus Football Club.

She was awarded a residency at Art Omi International Writers Program (Ghent, NY) in fall 2023.
Her work focuses on identity, migration and second generations. She has been curating courses on book review writing.

I think that whoever finds himself perpetrating involuntary racism is in turn a victim of history, a victim of mental structures that are the result of centuries of inequality between white people and persons of colour. I’m not saying we should tolerate it, I’m saying that we should refrain from only pointing the finger and we should contribute to the dismantling of those mental structures, because not even the most anti-racist of us is immune from them.
