FAVOLACCE (BAD TALES)
Italia, Svizzera 2020, Damiano D’Innocenzo, Fabio D’Innocenzo, 1t 38m
The middle class’ eternal longing for economic and cultural identity markers and need to differentiate themselves from the working class is duly described on film, especially in the United States. In Bad Tales, on the other hand, the plot is added to a seemingly sleepy suburb of Rome, where the neighbors Bruno and Pietro compete to have the smartest children, the nicest car and the most vulgar comments about the local women. In their self-centered search for confirmation, the adults ignore that something is about to happen to their children.
Like David Lynch (Blue Velvet) and Sofia Coppola (The Virgin Suicides), the D’Innocenzo brothers describe a suburban community where everything seems to be in order on the surface, but where an underlying sense of horror spreads as the action progresses. With clear inspiration from compatriot Matteo Garrone’s burlesque films, Bad Tales is a brilliant example of a frightening and comic fable about the less flattering sides of mankind.

THE TRUFFLE HUNTERS
USA, Hellas, Italia 2020, Michael Dweck, Gregory Kershaw, 1t 26m
Deep inside the woods of the Piemonte region in Italy, a group og 80-year-old men are looking for the world’s most expensive ingredient. Together with their loyal four-legged friends, they are hunting the White Alba Truffle – a hunt that is both dangerous, competitive and extremely addictive.
The Truffle Hunters, directed by Michael Dweck and Gregory Kershaw, dwell on these dedicated truffle hunters – the last of their sort – who has inherited their knowledge through generations, but are secretive when it comes to sharing how they discover the truffles. Sly middlemen are also lurking in the background, making big bucks of dealing truffles to gourmet stores as the supply is falling, and the demand is increasing manifold.
This year’s audience favourite at the Tromsø International Film Festival takes the aging hunters and their canines seriously in their hunt for the earth’s gold. At the same time, the documentary displays a good portion of humour in its portrayal of dogs getting the royal treatment in terms of grooming and food by their owners. Sit back, relax and enjoy this delicious treat of a film!
